What Is Amniocentesis?
Amniocentesis is a diagnostic prenatal test that involves collecting a small sample of amniotic fluid, the fluid surrounding your baby in the uterus. This fluid contains cells shed by the baby, which can be analysed for chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome, as well as a range of other genetic conditions depending on what’s being investigated.
The procedure is carried out under continuous ultrasound guidance, with a fine needle passed through the abdominal wall and into the amniotic sac to withdraw a small amount of fluid. Your baby’s heartbeat and movement are checked before and after the procedure. Most appointments, from consultation through to the amnio test itself and a short period of monitoring, are completed within an hour.
When Is Amnio Performed During Pregnancy
Amniocentesis is generally carried out from 15 weeks of pregnancy onward, most commonly between 15 and 20 weeks, though it can be performed later if a concern arises further into pregnancy, such as after an abnormal finding on a morphology scan. Performing amnio during pregnancy at this stage allows enough amniotic fluid to be present for safe sampling, while still leaving time to plan next steps depending on what the results show.
