What is a Morphology Scan?
A morphology scan also called an anatomy scan, mid-trimester scan, or anomaly scan is a detailed second trimester ultrasound performed between 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy.
The primary purpose of the morphology scan is to systematically assess fetal anatomy and screen for structural differences across all major fetal organ systems. A morphology scan on the Gold Coast at Haven Ultrasound typically evaluates:
- Fetal brain structures, including the cerebral ventricles, cerebellum, and posterior fossa
- Facial features, including the lips, nasal bone, and orbital structures
- The fetal spine for continuity and normal appearance
- The fetal heart, including the four-chamber view, outflow tracts, and great vessels
- Abdominal organs, including the stomach, liver, kidneys, and bladder
- Fetal limbs, hands, and feet
- Placental position and appearance
- Amniotic fluid volume
- Fetal growth measurements and estimated weight
- The cervix
A morphology scan is a screening examination and does not identify all structural differences. Your referring clinician or a specialist at Haven Ultrasound can discuss findings and any recommended next steps with you following your appointment.
What is a Fetal Growth and Wellbeing Scan?
A fetal growth and wellbeing scan is a focused ultrasound assessment performed during the second or third trimester to monitor fetal growth, assess amniotic fluid levels, and evaluate fetal wellbeing using Doppler blood flow assessment where appropriate.
Your GP or obstetrician may recommend a growth and wellbeing scan on the Gold Coast at various points throughout your pregnancy, including:
- When there is a concern about fetal growth based on clinical assessment or previous scan results
- For pregnancies at increased risk of growth restriction or placental insufficiency
- To monitor amniotic fluid volume where polyhydramnios or oligohydramnios has been identified
- In multiple pregnancies requiring closer surveillance
- Where additional monitoring has been recommended as part of your antenatal care plan
Fetal growth and wellbeing scans at Haven Ultrasound on the Gold Coast include Doppler assessment of the umbilical artery and, where clinically indicated, the middle cerebral artery and uterine arteries. Findings are reported to your referring clinician promptly to support ongoing antenatal management.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is a morphology scan performed?
A morphology scan is performed between 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. This timing allows for detailed assessment of fetal anatomy, as the baby has developed sufficiently for most major structures to be clearly visualised. Booking your appointment within this gestational window is important to ensure the scan can be completed as planned. Your GP or obstetrician will advise on the most appropriate timing for your individual circumstances.
How long does a morphology scan take?
A detailed morphology scan typically takes between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on fetal position, maternal body habitus, and the complexity of the examination. We allocate sufficient time for a thorough assessment. In some cases, a short break may be recommended mid-appointment to encourage the baby to change position if views of certain structures are initially limited.
Do I need a full bladder for a morphology scan?
A moderately full bladder is generally helpful for abdominal scanning at the morphology scan, as it can assist with visualisation of the lower uterine segment and placental edge. We suggest drinking approximately 500ml of water around an hour before your appointment. If certain structures require clearer assessment, a transvaginal scan may be recommended during the appointment, for which an empty bladder is preferred. Our team will guide you through any adjustments as needed.
What does the morphology scan assess?
The morphology scan provides a systematic assessment of fetal anatomy across all major organ systems, including the brain, face, spine, heart, abdominal organs, kidneys, limbs, and umbilical cord insertion. The scan also evaluates placental position, amniotic fluid volume, and fetal growth measurements including estimated fetal weight. The cervix may also be assessed. The morphology scan is a screening examination, and a normal result does not exclude all structural differences.
